Greece fully in line with Paris Climate Agreement objectives, Stathakis says

Greece is fully in line with the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and the “winter package” of the European Commission, Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis said.

The minister was addressing a conference on energy organised in the framework of the second “Visegrad-4 plus Balkan-4 plus” foreign ministers’ meeting in Sounio on Friday, held at the initiative of Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.

Stathakis presented the main axes of national energy planning, which include a reduction in lignite production so that this approaches roughly 20 pct, an increase in the share of RES to about 50 pct in the future and action to improve energy efficiency by 30 pct.

Referring to the central role of natural gas, Stathakis said it would act as a “bridge fuel” in the process of switching to clean energy. Given that the considerable dependence of European countries on gas imports creates a security of supply issue for EU member-states, the minister stressed that both European and national policies include diversifying sources and supply routes, increasing the number of suppliers and developing interconnections.

The minister also presented the major gas infrastructure projects that Greece is involved in and said that a growing number of companies with extensive experience in the use of hydrocarbons had shown interest in launching operations in Greece. He noted the gradual completion of the TAP pipeline, the East Med pipeline, the upgrading of the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Revythousa, the forthcoming construction of the floating LNG Terminal in Alexandroupolis and finally the Interconnector Greece – Bulgaria ( IGB), the construction of which is expected to begin in the second half of 2018.
