Voutsis voices confidence that 2019 pension cuts will not go ahead

Talking to the state broadcaster ERT on Saturday, Parliament President Nikos Voutsis said he was confident that pension cuts legislated to start in 2019 will not have to go ahead, basing his optimism on the good performance of the Greek economy.

He noted that the discussion with the institutions was no longer taking place on “memorandum terms” and said it would be good if either consensus or tolerance might be achieved by October 15, when European budgets will be discussed.

Voutsis predicted that the institutions would accept the Greek government’s position that the pension cuts were fiscal and not structural reforms and, as such, unnecessary. He also noted that any discussion on pensions also included the tax-free allowance, suggesting that “logic will prevail in the end.”
