Black Sea Sustainable Development Solutions Network to be based in Thessaloniki

The newly created Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) for the Black Sea is to be based in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in northern Greece. It will operate as part of the existing UN network (SDSN Global), providing a comprehensive scientific framework and policy action guide for implementing UN sustainable development goals.

The decision to propose the foundation of the SDSN Black Sea was made during a meeting of the university rectors in the Black Sea Universities Network on the topic “UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in the Black Sea Region: From Science to Implementation” held on June 19 in Thessaloniki.

The director of SDSN Global is Columbia University professor of economics Jeffrey D. Sachs, who will be speaking at the launch event for the new network on Thursday, while on Wednesday he will be awarded an honorary doctorate in economics from AUTH.

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
