EU Commission: The Prespes Agreement is an opportunity to promote economic cooperation

“The Commission has launched a study on sustainable economic development in the greater region of the Prespes Lakes, with particular emphasis on tourism,” said Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Negotiations on Enlargement, in his recent written answer to a question raised by SYRIZA Eurogroup head and European Parliament Vice President Dimitris Papadimoulis on boosting investments in Greece and North Macedonia, filed in autumn 2018 when the ratification of the Agreement was expected.

“The countries are committed to jointly developing a strategic plan to implement a border crossing point near the Prespes lakes, co-funded by the cross-border cooperation programme of the Instrument of Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) and a Greek regional programme,” Hahn said.

The Commission, through Commissioner Hahn, described the Prespes Agreement as an “example of reconciliation and an opportunity to strengthen good neighbourly relations”, which “further promotes political and economic cooperation.”

To the SYRIZA MEP’s question on the tools and mechanisms through which the Commission can contribute to investment in the region, he stressed that “the IPA is the EU’s main instrument for promoting investments in the ‘enlargement countries,'” and noted that the neighbouring country will continue to benefit from IPA III.
