SYRIZA blames government for Epaminondas Korkoneas decision

The appeal court’s decision to change the life sentence of Epaminondas Korkoneas, who as a policeman shot and killed teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos in 2008, to a 13-year jail sentence “raises strong questions and concern,” main opposition SYRIZA said late on Monday.

The appeals court had overturned an earlier ruling of a life sentencefor the premeditated murder of Grigoropoulos, 15, which at the time had led to nearly monthly-long riots in Athens.

Syriza accused the new government of insulting public opinion and of attempting to besmirch the penal code it passed as government by using it to choose the court that overturned the original sentence for a much lighter one, calling it “a sordid PR act”.
